So this week has gone by crazy fast, but I feel like the biggest thing I have learned was about plans and planning effectively. I attended a meeting and they emphasized the necessity of planning and used a great example from the Book of Mormon, in alma 43, Moroni is called at a young age of 25 to command an army, as missionaries we are called at relatively young ages to go out and fight for the salvation of hundreds, even thousands of souls. In verse 19-21 it talks about the difference of preparations of the nephritis and lamanites and because they had made necessary preparations they were able to stand strong and the lamanites were afraid,
“19 And when the armies of the Lamanites saw that the people of Nephi, or that Moroni, had prepared his people with breastplates and with arm-shields, yea, and also shields to defend their heads, and also they were dressed with thick clothing–
20 Now the army of Zerahemnah was not prepared with any such thing; they had only their swords and their cimeters, their bows and their arrows, their stones and their slings; and they were naked, save it were a skin which was girded about their loins; yea, all were naked, save it were the Zoramites and the Amalekites;
21 But they were not armed with breastplates, nor shields–therefore, they were exceedingly afraid of the armies of the Nephites because of their armor, notwithstanding their number being so much greater than the Nephites.”
The lamanite forces outnumbered the nephites, as missionaries, it sometimes feels like we are outnumbered by satans forces or all the people in our areas, but through their preparation their opposing forces feared them, it’s helped me to understand that I need to prepare in a way that satan and his followers fear me when I leave my apartment and step out to battle. As missionaries we are always planning it feels like, we plan once every week for our entire week and we create a daily plan every night, for the next day, but I learned from an elder here that the minute we step into the apartment from a long days dendo battle at 9 we begin planning for our next days battle. Sometimes it can feel repetitive, but in the Book of Mormon Moroni, never stopped planning, in Alma ch.50:1
“1 And now it came to pass that Moroni did not stop making preparations for war, or to defend his people against the Lamanites;”
Because he never stopped planning he was one step ahead of satan’s influences. Each day I fight for my nihonjin friends, I fight for their souls, for their families, that they will join gods army and withstand satans influences. Planning for them can be frustrating at times, not always knowing what to do for them, bu God has created the ultimate plan for each of his children, the plan of salvation. It is a perfect plan and when followed faithfully promises security, safety, and the greatest happiness you could ever imagine.
This week, we were able to teach yamauchi San God’s plan for us, the plan of salvation. We taught her that even before we came here we were friends and we chose this plan before and we were simply reminding her of it. It was amazing to feel the spirit so strong as we taught with kitahara shimai and see our beautiful friend recognize the truth of this plan. The best part was teaching the atonement and helping her to understand her savior and the personal relationship he has with her, it’s a beautiful thing when you teach people about the savior and his atonement and you see a light shine in their eyes as the spirit tells them it’s true. It’s amazing that God could create such a perfect plan for each of us, despite our differences, challenges, and weaknesses, this plan works for each of us and brings light, and hope. I know this plan is undeniably true.
This Saturday was such a treat, the priesthood set up a special activity to show appreciation for the women in the ward. Two of our friends yamauchi San and hiura San came, they cooked a delicious meal, decorated with flowers and what not, even got all dressed up and served us all and got the elders to help out, they had a beautiful program of videos, and ended by singing a beautiful classic Japanese song, made an arch and gave each of us flowers, it was so sweet! The women were so happy and our friends, yamauchi San and Hiura San were so impressed that the men of our church would do something so nice. Im grateful for the priesthood in our church and the role they play in God’s eternal plan of salvation. One other sweet miracle, four of our friends, yamauchi San, sugawara San ( a woman we met on the train who got a Book of Mormon on the train from another set of missionaries and wanted to come to church), yokouchi San, and Hiura San all came to church, but the wonderful miracle was to see the ward engulf them with warm hearts and love and include them. I love being a missionary and being able to see missionaries, and members work together to uplift others and to literally see the gospel change hearts everyday, it’s an amazing blessing!!! I love my life!!!!! Hope everyone has a wonderful Mother’s Day!!!
