So honestly time is short but this week was great!!!! On Saturday June 6th, one of my best friends noriko yamauchi shimai entered the waters of baptism. This has been one exhausting week but every minute of sleep lossed, every ounce of stress and worry we had was more than worth it to see yamauchi shimai dressed in white with the biggest grin of excitement to follow the example of the savior!
On the day of yamauchi shimais baptism we were rushing around getting everything in order making sure everything was prepped and what not, but because she is a little older even high her personality does not feel like it is the age that she is, we had to rest a little before she got dressed but as we did we were able to talk with her as friends and talked about how we were all so excited and we told her how much we loved her and joked for a bit, but in that little room at that moment I felt the spirit so strong and this scripture popped into my head,
Doctrine and covenants 50:22 “Wherefore, he that preacheth and he that receiveth, understand one another, and both are edified and rejoice together.”
Yamauchi Shimai are 62 years apart, we come from completely different countries, speak two different languages and at times did not always fully understand each other, our lives are so different and yet because of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, I came on a mission, I flew hundreds of miles away from home to meet this sweet little 82 year old woman who has changed my life completely. As we have taught her I have come to see my own faith and testimony grow along with hers, I have witnessed gods hand in helping us accomplish his work, I have watched as yamauchi shimai has had a mighty change of heart and has come to know of her savior Jesus Christ, and was grateful to rejoice with her in her decision to be baptized and follow the example of Jesus Christ. The service was great, mom, I wish you could have been there, her eyes were shining, she was so nervous before as they were reviewing what would happen during the baptism, but she said as she stepped in the water she felt peace and said she was emotionally touched by the service and all of her friends at came to support. It was great my good friends from yamate, the Satos came to the service, they were just baptized a year before and came to support, Yamauchi Shimai was so touched! To conclude she bore her testimony about how she planted a seed in her heart and it has grown and it continues to grow and she is excited for his new life that she has begun and the new experiences that lie ahead.
At Yamauchi Shimais baptism we sang, “I’ll find you my friend” in Japanese which is ” 見出そうmy friend” ok honestly I’m not a singer, but I was excited to sing this song because it had so much meaning for Reeves Shimai and I, a little over a month ago, Reeves Shimai and I were going to visit a member and literally no one was out at night so we had time to talk to each other, that day it seemed like no one really talked with us and I asked reeves shimai if she had found those people that she knew in the pre existence, we were both kind of silent and thought about how we felt like we had helped a lot of people but neither one of us was absolutely sure if we found our friends that we promised we would help. I thought a lot about that conversation and I noticed that reeves shimai and I began to pray more fervently that we would find those friends that we once knew and a few days later, Yamauchi Shimai called. She did not fully know why she was calling but said she could not forget the faces and good feeling she remembered when she met sister reeves and Hotu two weeks before. From that phone call we were able to meet with yamauchi shimai and introduce her to the light of the gospel and have seen it take root within her. Sister Reeves and i have felt that yamauchi shimai was one of those friends we knew before, and we over the moon rejoicing that through gods guiding hand, we were able to find each other once more. I truly know that this is the work of the lord, that he knows us all individually and loves us all and desires the best for us and has placed people along our paths to help us return to his presence. I am so grateful to be a missionary and find more friends and help them remember the gospel truths that we all once knew.
